Every few weeks, a courier arrives at the studio with a box that’s been packed with unusual care. Inside is usually a single bottle, wrapped in soft cloth or bubble wrap or, occasionally, an old shirt someone couldn’t bear to throw away either. There’s usually a note. The bottle is from a wedding, an anniversary, a milestone birthday, a business launch that finally worked, a father who has died and left a favourite whisky.
These are the raw materials of our Bring Your Own Bottle service — BYOB, for short. Every week we turn a handful of these bottles into finished pieces that mean something. Here’s how it actually works.
Step one: the brief conversation
Before you ship us the bottle, we want to have a conversation. Usually over WhatsApp, sometimes email. We want to understand three things: what the bottle is, what the occasion was, and what you’d like it to become.
The bottle matters because different shapes and glass thicknesses suit different transformations. A Bombay Sapphire is thin-walled and cuts cleanly — it makes beautiful tumblers and tea light holders. A Chivas Regal is thicker and better suited to a serving platter or lamp. A champagne bottle’s punt (the indent at the base) means it has a very different structural relationship with a lamp fitting than a wine bottle does. We’ll match your bottle to the transformations it’s technically suited for, then ask which one appeals to you.
Step two: the mock-up
For most BYOB pieces, we produce a simple visual mock-up before you ship the bottle. This is usually a sketch or a photograph of a similar existing piece, annotated with what your version would look like — cut lines, edge placement, hardware fitting, whether the label is preserved.
This step matters because BYOB has a specific psychological weight. The bottle can’t be replaced if we get it wrong. Both parties benefit from being aligned on the final look before production begins.
Step three: shipping the bottle
Once we’ve agreed on the concept, we share our studio address and let you ship the bottle to us. Any reputable courier works. We recommend double-boxing the bottle with plenty of internal padding — bubble wrap, crumpled paper, or soft cloth. For particularly rare or high-value bottles, we can arrange courier pick-up from any address in India (small fee applies).
When the bottle arrives, we confirm safe receipt within 24 hours and file it into our production queue.
Step four: cutting and finishing
The actual production of a BYOB piece is the same craft technique we use for our standard wholesale production, but with a different tempo. Standard production runs prioritise batch efficiency. BYOB pieces get one artisan’s full attention.
The bottle goes through structural inspection first — we check for hairline cracks, thin spots in the glass, and any internal weakness that could cause a problem during cutting. Then diamond-wheel cutting to the pre-agreed lines. Then three stages of edge finishing. Then, depending on the piece, hardware installation (lamp fitting, mounting base), painting or glazing, and packaging.
For a standard BYOB piece — a lamp, a tumbler set, a tea light holder — this takes 2 to 3 weeks. For sculptural pieces or multi-bottle commissions, longer.
Step five: the photograph
Before we ship the finished piece to you, we send a photograph. This step is unusual in most craft services and it’s deliberate. You’ve trusted us with an irreplaceable bottle. We think you should see what it became before it’s in a courier van heading back to you.
Occasionally the finished piece prompts one small change — a different hardware finish, a slightly different mounting. If it’s reasonably possible, we do it. Then the piece ships.
What arrives at your door
Every BYOB piece ships in a Krystal Kraft gift box with two things inside. First, the piece itself, cushioned in tissue and wood-wool. Second, a small story insert — a printed card with a brief note about your donor bottle and the transformation. This is often the part BYOB customers remember most, because it turns the finished piece from a beautiful object into a documented one.

The one thing to know before starting a BYOB order
BYOB is a service that only works if you can articulate what makes the bottle matter. The bottle’s brand and shape are the technical starting point. The story is what makes the finished piece something worth commissioning — and something we can put into the story insert.
